Abdomen MRI
Abdomen MRI in Utah
Abdominal discomfort can be difficult to diagnose with standard imaging alone. A TaylorMed MRI abdomen scan provides a closer look at the organs and soft tissues in your abdomen so your provider can better understand what’s going on. You will need to fast for six hours before your scan. During the exam, you will receive breathing instructions to help minimize motion from normal breathing.
This exam focuses on the solid organs of the abdomen, including the liver, spleen, kidneys, adrenal glands, pancreas, and gallbladder. It provides only a limited view of the stomach and bowel, as these organs are constantly moving and more difficult to evaluate with MRI. If you have a known mass or lesion in your abdomen, including the liver, contrast is required for proper imaging, and we are not able to perform contrast studies at TaylorMed MRI.
At TaylorMed MRI there’s no referral needed. You can schedule directly, and an abdomen MRI is available for $499.

What to Expect During an Abdomen MRI
Preparation
You will need to fast for 6 hours prior to your appointment, including food and water. For your safety, our staff will provide you with scrubs to wear during your visit. This measure helps prevent any interference from clothing that may contain metallic fibers, like silver or copper, which are sometimes woven into athletic or moisture-wicking materials.
Procedure
You will lie flat on the MRI table with a special coil (camera) placed above and below your abdomen while your abdomen is positioned in the center of the scanner. During the exam, you will be given breathing instructions to help minimize motion from normal breathing and ensure the best image quality.
Experience
The scan doesn’t cause pain. You’ll hear rhythmic tapping or humming sounds, but headphones or earplugs are provided. Breathing instructions will be given during the exam.
Duration
An abdomen MRI usually takes 20-30 minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions About BFrequently Asked Questions About Abdomen MRI rain MRI
An abdomen MRI is an imaging test that uses magnetic fields to produce detailed pictures of the abdominal organs, including the liver, spleen, kidneys, pancreas, adrenal glands, and gallbladder.
It can reveal gallstones, liver enlargement, fatty liver changes, cysts, pancreas, adrenal glands and splenic enlargement.
Some facilities perform abdomen MRIs with contrast, which helps highlight lesions, tumors, or infections. At TaylorMed MRI, exams are performed without contrast dye. This means the scan is excellent for evaluating structural changes like gallstones, cysts, or organ enlargement, but limited for cancer, infection, or vascular imaging.
Most abdomen MRIs take about 20 minutes for the scan itself, but you can expect your total visit to last around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the number of images needed.
Without contrast, an MRI can sometimes show abnormal tissue or masses, but it can’t reliably characterize cancer. If cancer is suspected, your doctor may recommend additional imaging.
