Lumbar Spine MRI
Lumbar Spine MRI in Utah
At TaylorMed MRI, we provide advanced lumbar spine MRI imaging to evaluate the lower back. This exam is commonly ordered to help identify the cause of low back pain, leg pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness.
A lumbar spine MRI produces detailed images of the vertebrae, discs, spinal cord, nerves, and surrounding soft tissues, making it one of the most effective tools for diagnosing conditions of the lower spine.
At TaylorMed MRI, a doctor’s order is not required. We also keep pricing simple and affordable: a lumbar spine MRI can be performed for $399.

What to Expect During a Lumbar Spine MRI
Preparation
Remove any jewelry, piercings, or metal before the exam. For your safety, you’ll be asked to change into scrubs provided by our facility. This helps ensure that no metal or metallic fibers, such as silver or copper found in certain performance or moisture-wicking fabrics, interfere with the equipment or your procedure.
Procedure
You’ll lie flat on a padded table that slides into the scanner. The technologist will position your lower back for clear imaging.
Experience
The exam is painless, though you’ll hear clicking sounds from the machine. Ear protection is provided for comfort.
Duration
Most lumbar spine MRIs take 30 to 45 minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions About Lumbar Spine MRI
A lumbar spine MRI is a non-invasive scan that uses magnetic fields to create detailed images of the lower spine, spinal cord, discs, nerves, and surrounding tissues.
This scan can reveal herniated discs, nerve compression, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, arthritis, and traumatic injuries in the lumbar region.
For a lumbar spine MRI, your head usually goes into the scanner first. Depending on your height, your head may stay inside the tunnel for the full scan or end up just outside of it once your lower back is positioned correctly.
The MRI scan itself usually takes about 20 minutes, but plan to be in our office for around 30–45 minutes total to allow time for check-in, preparation, and wrap-up after your exam.
