SI Joint MRI
SI Joint MRI in Utah
Pain in the lower back or hips is often linked to the sacroiliac (SI) joints, where the sacrum meets the pelvis. At TaylorMed MRI, our SI joint MRI provides a clear, detailed view of this area. The scan is designed to evaluate the SI joints, the bones of the sacrum, and portions of the pelvis to help identify possible sources of discomfort.
At TaylorMed MRI, there’s no referral needed. You can schedule directly, and the flat rate is $399.
Conditions an SI Joint MRI Can Help Evaluate
- Sacroiliitis (inflammation of the SI joints)
- Arthritis or degenerative changes of the SI joints
- Stress fractures or bone injury in the sacrum
- Joint space narrowing or irregularity
- Erosion or bone marrow changes related to inflammatory arthritis
- Limited evaluation of pelvic alignment and surrounding structures
- Lower lumbar spine

What to Expect During an SI Joint MRI
Preparation
You’ll need to remove all jewelry, belts, and other metal objects before your scan. For your safety, our team will provide scrubs for you to wear during your visit. This helps ensure that any metallic fibers—like silver or copper found in some activewear or moisture-wicking clothing—don’t interfere with the imaging equipment or procedure.
Procedure
You’ll lie on the MRI table while your pelvis and lower spine are positioned using a specialized coil (camera) placed both underneath and on top of you. Your SI joints will be centered in the machine, and depending on your height, your head may be outside the scanner. Cushions and pads will be used to keep you comfortable and minimize movement throughout the exam.
Experience
The scan doesn’t hurt. You’ll hear tapping or buzzing from the machine, but earplugs or headphones are provided.
Duration
An SI joint MRI usually takes 20 minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions About SI Joint MRI
It’s a non-invasive scan that produces detailed images of the sacroiliac joints, the sacrum, lower lumbar area, and parts of the pelvis to help evaluate joint or bone pain.
It can reveal arthritis, inflammation, sacroiliitis, stress fractures, joint space changes, and bone marrow changes.
A normal exam shows healthy joint spacing, smooth bone surfaces, and no swelling or inflammatory changes. An abnormal exam may reveal arthritis, inflammation, erosion, or fractures.
Most MRIs take about 20 minutes to complete, but your total visit typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes.
