You will lie flat on a table while your mid-back area is positioned in the scanner.

Frequently Asked Questions About Thoracic Spine MRI
A thoracic spine MRI is a non-invasive imaging test that uses magnetic fields to create detailed pictures of the spinal cord, vertebrae, discs, nerves, and surrounding tissues in your mid-back region.
It can reveal herniated discs, nerve compression, degenerative changes, fractures, spinal stenosis, and inflammation affecting the thoracic spine.
- A normal MRI shows healthy discs, vertebrae, and spinal cord with no compression or abnormalities.
- An abnormal MRI may show herniations, degeneration, pinched nerves, arthritis, or spinal cord damage.
The MRI scan itself typically takes about 20 minutes. However, you can expect to be in our office for approximately 30–45 minutes from start to finish.
Generally, only your mid-back and upper torso enter the scanner. The rest of your body may remain outside, depending on the machine.
