What to Expect During a Thumb MRI

Preparation

Before your exam, remove all rings, watches, and metal objects. For your safety, you’ll need to change into scrubs provided by our facility. This precaution helps ensure that materials containing metal or metallic fibers, such as silver or copper often found in athletic or moisture-wicking clothing, don’t interfere with the equipment or your scan.

Procedure

You will lie on your stomach on the MRI table, and your arm will be gently positioned inside the imaging coil above your head. This “Superman” position helps capture the most accurate and detailed images of your arm and hand.

Experience

The scan is completely painless. The only sensation is hearing the rhythmic tapping or humming of the MRI machine. Earplugs or headphones are provided.

Duration

A thumb MRI usually takes 20 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions About Thumb MRI

A thumb MRI is a safe imaging test that uses magnetic fields to produce clear pictures of the bones, ligaments, tendons, and soft tissues in the thumb.

It can reveal ligament tears, tendon injuries, arthritis, joint damage, bone bruises, cysts, or inflammation.

Yes. MRI can identify arthritis early, showing cartilage wear, inflammation, and joint changes long before they appear on an X-ray.

Your thumb will be positioned in the center of the machine while you lie on your stomach with your arm extended above your head in a “Superman” position. Your head will also be inside the scanner during the exam.

The scan itself takes about 20 minutes, but plan to spend roughly 30–45 minutes in our office to allow time for check-in, preparation, and positioning before and after your MRI.
